What is The Health Careers and Workforce Diversity (HCWD) Program? The Health Careers and Workforce Diversity Program introduces youth, with special emphasis on minority youth, to health careers. The NC AHEC Program is committed to expanding the development of activities that will serve to increase the representation of minority populations in health careers. Programs are designed based on the five core functions of the program. The Minority Healthcare Professional Association is a group which is comprised of individuals from the community, who represent a cross-section of healthcare and related professions. This group advises Area L AHEC of the needs of the minority community as they relate to health careers awareness. The group also looks at other issues which impact minority access to information about the healthcare industry. If you are a healthcare professional and would like to be a part of the Association, please contact the HCWD office. What are some HCWD programs? Camp PUSH is a week long residential math and science camp filled with fun, travel, and development. Camp PUSH is for middle school students. PUSH is an acronym for Preparing Under-served Students in Health and Science. Health Careers Course - A continuing education program designed to enhance health careers awareness and exposure. The course is one week, targeting students and educators (counselors/teachers) and is held daily at our regional hospitals. The Puppet Bunch Presentation features a story about Ashley and Josh in "The Great Hospital Adventure" and it highlights about 8 different health careers. Students will thoroughly enjoy learning about health careers and healthy behaviors during this entertaining thirty-minute classroom presentation, which includes a video movie, hands on puppet interaction and reinforces 911 procedures.
